How to estimate your driving range

  1. Step 1

    Enter your battery capacity in kWh — use the usable figure if you know it, or the advertised capacity for a close estimate.

  2. Step 2

    Add your average efficiency in any unit — km/kWh, mi/kWh, Wh/km or kWh/100km — from your trip computer or a measured trip.

  3. Step 3

    Set the current and target state of charge to see the expected range and energy available between them.

How the range maths works

The estimate is a simple multiplication:range = battery capacity × usable SOC% × distance per kWh. A 77 kWh battery driven from 80% down to 10% gives you 70% of its energy — about 54 kWh. At an average of 6 km/kWh that is roughly 323 km of driving before you reach your target charge. If your efficiency figure is a consumption like Wh/km, the calculator converts it for you.

Why real-world range beats the brochure figure

Advertised EPA and WLTP ranges assume mild weather and gentle test cycles. Motorway speeds, winter temperatures, headwinds, roof racks and a heavy right foot all eat into the real number — sometimes by a third. Planning with your own measured efficiency means no surprises: you’ll know whether you can skip the next charger or should stop for ten minutes now rather than crawl later. Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this range estimate?

The maths is exact for the numbers you enter — usable energy multiplied by your distance per kWh. Real-world range then varies with speed, temperature, terrain, payload and climate control, so treat the result as a planning figure and keep a safety buffer, especially on motorway trips.

Why shouldn't I plan to use 100% of my battery?

Manufacturers quote gross capacity, but a buffer at the top and bottom protects battery health, and arriving at a charger with a few percent left is far less stressful. Most drivers plan trips between about 80% and 10% state of charge.

What efficiency figure should I enter?

Use your car's long-term average from the trip computer for the season you're driving in. If you don't have one, measure a real trip with our efficiency calculator first, then feed the result in here.

How much range does an EV lose in winter?

Expect around 10–30% less range in freezing weather depending on the car, speed and heater use. Heat pumps lose noticeably less than resistive heaters. Enter a winter efficiency figure to see the difference before you set off.
